You may or may not have heard some of his music or even know who he is. Sure, he’s been making music since the age of 9 and sure he’s only Saint Paul, Minnesota’s hottest rapper. So are you sure you’ve never heard of him or heard his music? Ok, lets help you dig out from under that rock. What about that Kanye West smash single “All Day” featuring Theophilus London and some other kid? That other kid is 21 year old Allan Kyariga, -aka- Allan Kingdom, our June digital cover star. Kingdom generated some new buzz and was exposed to a broader audience when he joined Kanye West and Theophilus London on stage at the Brit Awards back in February, for what many called the best performance of the show. It was the only performance everyone was talking about the next day. But in addition to the performance praises, many asked who the kid singing the now famous hook that had Taylor Swift in a trance was. Who did Kanye West just introduce to the world?
Remember the hook?
I took a deep sweet breath, and I reached into my earth Gave him what I had left At that moment I dispersed At that moment I dispersed
Listen to his new track “Keep it easy” above before you go on! The bass will catch you.
Following the Brit Awards performance back in February, Allan Kingdom spoke with Complex about how it all came together and how it was nerve-racking to work with Kanye West:
Two nights before, they told me I needed to be there that night. Obviously, that wasn’t possible, but I got there the day of. Everything happened so fast. Met Theophilus London for the first time outside of the hotel. We took a van to the venue, had a rehearsal, and that was it. He put together that show, just like that. Really quick. He had Theophilus call up Skepta and say, “Bring all your boys. We need you all to come. Bring everyone.”
Born in Winnipeg, Canada, a young Allan Kingdom landed in Saint Paul Minnesota where he still resides today and where his music career took off, building a loyal following. His first big release “Talk to Strangers” debuted back in 2013. He wrote and produced the whole project which won him rave reviews on the independent circuit (listen below).
He followed up “Talk to strangers” with his second release “Future Memoirs” which was called a “Fantastic introduction to the St. Paul, Minnesota emcee/producer” by 2 Dope Boyz .
Allan Kingdom is unique in his sound as well as his style. He rarely if ever dons the usual “rapper” get up. He is refreshingly simple in his style which he calls “The Northern Gentleman Look” which usually consists of cuffed jeans/pants,, vests, button down shirts and shoes or perfectly broken in boots. His musical style and effortless image is what helps him resonate with his fans on social media and at live events. He also has eyes on him in the form of some major publications. Complex Magazine named him one of the 25 new rappers to watch out for and was crowned Best Hip Hop Artist of 2014 by City Pages. He counts rappers like Andre 3000, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and Kid Cudi as influencers in his style and image.
Here is our Allan Kingdom style lookbook:
If you ask his fans, Allan Kingdom is on his way to greater things in music. His style may also lead him down the path of his big brother Kanye West with a clothing label. For now though, this young MC/Producer is continuing to build his sound and his following as he executes his plan to take Hip Hop.
